Entry

Any entry to your house becomes a drop-zone - a jumble of shoes, book bags, sports equipment, and mail. For a front entrance, I always include a gorgeous console table or credenza that can easily hide away smaller items while still welcoming guests with style. At a back door or mudroom, I like to include cubbies and hooks for rain boots, bags, coats, and more.

Living Spaces

In a room shared by everyone in the family, clutter can build up faster than almost any other room. I look for smart solutions that can hide everything from books and games to toys and DVDs. Even if you’ve mounted your TV on the wall, use an entertainment console to help you slip things out of sight.

I also like to add built-in storage for my clients, especially in dens, home offices, and playrooms. They do a great job of hiding paper, printers, board games, and more. Remember to reserve the open shelves for well-styled vignettes of books and art.

Dining Room

If you’re like most people, this may now be a Zoom room or office for you now, so storage isn’t just limited to serving items and extra glassware. A credenza or buffet is perfect for the dining room because it can hide trays and candlesticks or a printer and scanner, depending on how you’re using the room. The bonus is that the surface is perfect for serving up drinks or meals when you have guests over again (and isn’t it nice to know we can do that?!).

Kitchen

The most important thing to remember for storage in a kitchen is to take advantage of every single square inch of space. For example, always take your kitchen cabinets all the way up to the ceiling. Having an open area between your cabinets and the ceiling only gives you a space to collect dust. Extending the cabinetry offers great (and dust-free) storage at the top for things you don’t use as often. And where you don’t have closed cabinets, consider open shelves for cookbooks or storage for pretty bowls.

Closet

For every closet in your house, think about how you can create an organized and smart system. Thanks to places like The Container Store, you can find boxes, drawers, and shelves that can store anything and everything. I create custom cabinetry for my clients’ closets so they can easily find whatever they need, sorted by occasion and season! Don’t limit your fabulous organization to just the closet in the principal bedroom - every closet in your home should be as well-organized as possible. After all, that’s where you can store everything from luggage to linens to coats to cleaning supplies!

Kids’ Rooms

A kid’s room is notorious for being messy, so we’ve traditionally relied on toy boxes, shelves, and closets to help keep the clutter down to a minimum. But I have one place that we tend to forget that’s perfect for storage - under the bed. In the room below, I created a custom daybed that can serve as seating or the perfect bedtime oasis. But the best part is that it’s high enough off the floor to allow for drawers and storage underneath. Again, the idea is to use every inch of space that you can.
