Selecting the Best Statement Lighting

Statement lighting can make a huge impact on a room’s design. When you find the right look, it’s almost like having another work of art in the room. Some of the most beautiful homes in shelter magazines have these bold light designs anchoring the spaces. But there are important things to consider when selecting that statement light, so use these 4 pro tips to help you find the perfect piece.

1. Set the Scene

Where you hang a statement piece is just as important as what it looks like. You want to select a room that can handle the drama, and that will showcase the light fixture in all its glory. There’s nothing worse than a room that is overwhelmed by the fixture, or a view that’s blocked, or even a fixture that’s fighting for attention with the rest of the room. All of the design elements in the room should be in harmony. So choose the setting carefully.

2. Form AND Function

The entire reason for a light fixture is to provide light. Sounds simple, but sometimes we can get caught up in a gorgeous design and forget that we actually need the fixture to function correctly, too. In the dining room above, that lovely sculpture sets a tone, but it also has several bright bulbs hidden in the design. It creates the perfect light for dinner parties and events. Dining rooms are one of my favorite spaces for statement fixtures because they look stunning and they offer the perfect amount of light.

3. Remember Scale

Just like any other design element or piece of furniture, scale is very important when making your selections. Choose a giant light for a small room and it will overwhelm the space. And a tiny fixture in a large or tall room will get lost. Balancing the scale is important for a polished look.

4. Vintage Style

Don’t forget that you can find stunning special antique or vintage designs that will set your room’s design apart, too. One of my favorite lighting designers is Louise Gaskill. She creates new looks from vintage components for incredible one-of-a-kind designs. Below you can see a close-up of the beautiful piece I placed in the dining room above.
