Fresh Outdoor Room Ideas

We’re only a couple of short weeks from the start of spring, but it’s already warming up here in the South. Of course that shifts our attention to outdoor rooms and al fresco entertaining. There’s nothing better than a dinner party under the stars, or a fun day socializing with friends on the porch. So here are some ideas to help you freshen up your outdoor spaces.

Think Inside

Plan your outdoor rooms the way you do your interior spaces. You want a space for dining, a living room area, and even an outdoor kitchen. You could go even further, depending on your outdoor space, and add an outdoor bar or even a sleeping porch.

Comfort First

Always select the most comfortable furniture and cushions that you can. After all, outdoor living is all about relaxing and enjoying the fresh air. So you want friends, family, and guests to be comfortable enough to stay a while.

Add Some Color

Outdoor living should be fun and vibrant, so don’t forget to add a few punches of color. Outdoor accessories are perfect for that, like pillows, throws, rugs, and more. In the space above, I added coral outdoor pillows to the palette for a gorgeous look.

Natural Elements

Texture is so important for outdoor rooms, especially when it’s natural wood, wicker, rattan, and cork. But a touch of faux bois is also fun and gives a look of organic glam to the space I designed above. Remember that, even though these rooms are surrounded by nature, you should bring some plants and flowers into the spaces, too.

Conversation Areas

If you have any corners or areas that aren’t large enough for a sofa or an outdoor dining table, remember that these can be fabulous conversation areas. All you need is a couple of chairs and a table for drinks - then you have an instant gathering space.

Follow the Sun

When we’re planning outdoor spaces for my clients, I like to see the house at different times of day to see where the sun hits. That will help you decide where to place a patio, terrace, or shaded porch. In the morning, it’s so nice to have a quiet place for coffee in the sun. But in the afternoon, you’ll want to have a place to escape the heat. It’s great to have options!
