The Best Colors for Restful Retreats

There’s nothing better than a great night’s sleep. But too often that is difficult for a lot of us to achieve. This is where interior design can definitely make a difference. I love to create calm and quiet retreats that help my clients get the best rest that they can. We use tricks of the trade like light-blocking draperies, fabulous bed linens and pillows, and amazing textural furnishings. But one of the most important things you can do to create a restful bedroom is to consider color. There are definitely colors that offer a calming effect - you just have to find the one that strikes that chord for you. Here are my top colors for dreamy bedrooms!

Navy Blue

A deep, dark color like navy creates an almost cocoon-like effect in a bedroom. It envelopes the space in a soothing hue that invites a good night’s rest. You want to set the stage right away in a bedroom, to reset your body’s clock and to calm your emotions. This color begins that tranquil process the minute you open the door.

Leaf Green

For people who prefer a lighter palette, this color is a perfect choice. Because it’s a color from nature, this pale green offers a quietly fresh look. Green is well-known as a peaceful color, and when you combine it with other earth tones, it is an amazing palette for stress reduction. And less stress means more sleep!

Pale Pink

Pink is so well known for its soothing impact that there is literally something called The Pink Effect. Pink is one of the most calming colors on the spectrum, so it’s no wonder that this hue is perfect for bedrooms. It’s a color that also signifies love and hope, so it lifts our spirits while it also relaxes us. I like to balance this sweet look with a bit of brown to keep it from going too saccharine.

Sky Blue

Just like pale green tones, this shade of blue makes us think of being outside, so it’s naturally calming. Reflecting both water colors and a beautiful spring sky, blue is the perfect color for a bedroom. Use it to paint the walls and ceiling, or bring it into the room with linens and drapery.
