My Nursery Design for the Flower Magazine Designer Showhouse

I was thrilled to be named one of the interior designers for the second annual Flower Magazine Designer Showhouse, located in Baton Rouge. We were assigned spaces within a 6,000-square-foot Goodwood Estate house. The home was open to the public, with a portion of ticket sales going to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. I was assigned the nursery and en-suite bathroom, which was exciting since I love to design children’s spaces. I envisioned a sweet but sophisticated style for this room, and of course it would include a floral theme given that Flower was the sponsor and host of this project.

The floral print I selected for the drapery and the custom canopy over the daybed also provided the palette for the room. The Liberty Home Tree of Life inspired pattern balances the pink background with blues and greens that coordinate with the stylized fern wallpaper in a soft sage green.

I wanted this to design a room that could work perfectly as a baby grew up, so I included a Coley Home daybed upholstered in pink mohair. While luxuroius, mohair is also one of the most forgiving and durable upholstery fabrics on the market. This seating area is perfect for parents snuggling with baby, but could also become a fabulous reading nook for a little girl.

I continued the layers of patterns in the room with a fantastic Missoni Home rug from Stark Carpet that added a vibrant and cozy rick rack look to the floor. Another highlight of the room is this original art by local Louisiana artist, Ashton Shaw Despot. I always love working with local artists and this abstract bayou scene brings a subtle nod to Louisiana culture to the room in a perfect pastel palette.

I’m known for interiors that balance timeless design with more modern updates. So in this nursery I selected a classic spindle crib and an antique chest, and then balanced them with modern art, a sleek pouf, and a more contemporary bone inlay side table.

On the antique chest, I used a beautiful ceramic floral lamp, an angel sculpture, and the perfect books for a baby’s room. I also created a small gallery on the wall with more vintage items to add to that sweet and sophisticated theme.

For the adjoining bath, I used a Liberty pattern wallpaper on the walls, coordinating the look with a pale green for the cabinetry. Again, I wanted this space to be able to grow with the little one, so I used a chic antique mirror and beautiful crystal sconces from Currey and Co to keep things classic. And don’t miss the beautiful custom pendant by Blumera, highlighted in the mirror’s reflection. It was a showstopper!
